If you're flying to the Delaware beaches to look at real estate, there's an airport you may not have considered: Delaware Coastal Airport (GED) in Georgetown, Delaware.

Located in Sussex County, Delaware Coastal Airport is particularly interesting for private pilots, corporate travelers, charter passengers and buyers arriving by private aircraft.

And there's one important fact travelers should understand before making plans:

Delaware Coastal Airport does not currently offer scheduled commercial airline passenger service.

Instead, GED is a general aviation airport serving private aircraft, corporate jets, flight training and other aviation operations. Airport management confirmed in 2025 that scheduled passenger airline service was not offered, while the airport's own planning documents characterize its primary demand as general aviation. For certain Delaware beach home buyers, however, that may make GED even more interesting.

Where Is Delaware Coastal Airport?

Delaware Coastal Airport is located in Georgetown, Delaware, in the heart of Sussex County.

The airport promotes itself specifically for its proximity to Delaware's beaches, noting that the coast is only about 15 miles away. It also provides rental-car access and describes itself as the preferred airport for Delaware's beaches. Delaware Coastal Airport | Sussex County

That makes GED particularly relevant for buyers heading toward:

  • Bethany Beach
  • Ocean View
  • Rehoboth Beach
  • Lewes
  • Dewey Beach
  • Fenwick Island
  • Millsboro
  • Millville
  • Selbyville
  • Other Sussex County communities

Unlike Wilmington Airport in northern Delaware, you're already in Sussex County when you land at Delaware Coastal Airport.

What Airlines Fly Into Delaware Coastal Airport?

Currently, none of the major scheduled passenger airlines serve Delaware Coastal Airport.

You won't find regularly scheduled American, Delta, United, Southwest or Avelo passenger flights into GED.

Delaware Coastal is instead a general aviation facility capable of handling everything from small private aircraft to large corporate jets. The airport says its facilities can accommodate aircraft up to the Boeing 737 class. Delaware Coastal Airport | Sussex County

That's an important distinction because internet searches for “flights to Delaware Coastal Airport” can easily create confusion between:

Scheduled commercial service — buying a seat on an airline such as American or Southwest.

and

General/private aviation — private aircraft, business aviation and charter operations.

GED is currently in the second category.

Private and Corporate Flights Into Delaware Coastal Airport

This is where Delaware Coastal Airport becomes especially interesting for luxury and second-home buyers.

The airport highlights its ability to handle large corporate jets, along with recent investments in runways, pavement, lighting and aviation infrastructure. Its main runway measures approximately 5,500 feet by 150 feet, with a secondary crosswind runway measuring approximately 3,109 feet by 75 feet. Delaware Coastal Airport | Sussex County

The airport is continuing to expand. Long-term development plans include additional taxiways and apron space, additional corporate-jet hangars and further infrastructure improvements. Delaware Coastal Airport | Sussex County

For a buyer who owns an aircraft or regularly travels privately, that makes Georgetown an important part of the Delaware coastal real estate conversation.

How Quickly Can Private Aircraft Reach Delaware Coastal Airport?

Delaware Coastal Airport promotes some remarkably short approximate flight times from major East Coast markets:

  • Washington, D.C. area: approximately 20 minutes
  • Philadelphia area: approximately 22 minutes
  • New York City area: approximately 30 minutes

Those are airport-published flight-time estimates rather than scheduled commercial flight times, and actual flying time varies based on aircraft, departure airport, routing, weather and air traffic. Delaware Coastal Airport | Sussex County

But they demonstrate why GED can be valuable for people who own second homes at the Delaware beaches.

A buyer living primarily in the New York, Philadelphia or Washington region could potentially reach Sussex County by private aircraft much faster than driving.

How Much Does It Cost to Fly Into Delaware Coastal Airport?

There is no standard “ticket price” because GED doesn't have scheduled commercial airline tickets.

Private aviation costs depend on:

  • Aircraft type
  • Departure airport
  • Charter company
  • Aircraft availability
  • Passenger count
  • Flight time
  • Fuel
  • Crew requirements
  • Positioning costs
  • Landing and handling requirements
  • Whether you're chartering the entire aircraft or using another private-flight arrangement

The airport currently publishes fuel pricing and aviation services on its website. As of October 2026, it was displaying Jet-A with FSII at $8.40 per gallon and AVGAS at $7.90 per gallon. Fuel prices can change frequently. Delaware Coastal Airport | Sussex County

For charter passengers, the appropriate approach is to request a quote from a reputable charter operator for your exact departure airport, travel dates and aircraft requirements.

What If I'm Flying Commercial to Bethany Beach?

For most home buyers, this will be the more important question.

If you're traveling on a scheduled airline, don't search for an airline ticket to GED.

Instead, compare nearby commercial airports and then drive to Bethany Beach.

Depending upon your city of origin and travel schedule, possibilities include:

Salisbury Regional Airport (SBY) — a useful commercial option on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

Wilmington Airport (ILG) — Avelo offers scheduled passenger flights from several markets.

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) — offers a much larger selection of airlines and destinations.

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) — another major airport with extensive domestic and international connectivity.

The cheapest airline ticket isn't necessarily the cheapest or easiest total trip. Compare airfare, rental car costs, driving distance and arrival time before deciding.

Delaware Coastal Airport vs. Wilmington Airport

These two airports serve very different purposes.

  Delaware Coastal Airport Wilmington Airport
Airport Code GED ILG
Location Georgetown, DE New Castle, DE
Scheduled passenger airline service No Yes
General aviation Yes Yes
Corporate/private aircraft Yes Yes
Geographic advantage Already in Sussex County Northern Delaware
Best for Private/corporate aviation Selected scheduled commercial flights
Bethany Beach buyers Excellent location for private flyers Commercial-flight alternative

For private aviation, GED has the geographic advantage because it puts you directly into Sussex County.

For a buyer who needs a scheduled airline seat, ILG or another commercial airport makes more sense.

Flying Private to Look at Bethany Beach Real Estate?

This is where the airport and real estate pieces fit together especially well.

Imagine living primarily in the Northeast while owning a home near the Delaware coast.

You could fly into Georgetown, pick up a rental car and continue toward your property in:

  • Bethany Beach
  • Ocean View
  • Fenwick Island
  • Rehoboth Beach
  • Lewes
  • Millsboro
  • Another Sussex County community

Delaware Coastal Airport specifically notes that rental cars are available through Hertz. Delaware Coastal Airport | Sussex County

For buyers accustomed to business aviation, proximity to GED may therefore become a legitimate factor in deciding where along the Delaware coast to purchase.

Tips for Buyers Flying Into Sussex County to Look at Homes

If you're traveling to the Delaware beaches specifically to purchase real estate:

  • Contact Bob before arranging your trip. We'll make sure the properties you're interested in can actually be shown while you're here.
  • Tell me how you're arriving. Private aviation into GED creates a different itinerary than flying commercially into Wilmington, Salisbury, Baltimore or Philadelphia.
  • Get financing or proof of funds organized before traveling.
  • Send your favorite listings in advance. I'll use those homes to better understand what you're looking for.
  • Tell me whether this is a primary residence, vacation home or investment property.
  • Establish your price range before the trip.
  • Tell me how important beach proximity is. Walking to the ocean and being a 15-minute drive away are very different property searches.
  • Think about waterfront access. Oceanfront, bayfront, canal-front and inland properties have different considerations.
  • Consider flood zones and insurance costs.
  • Ask about HOA and condominium fees.
  • Discuss rental plans before choosing properties. Community and local restrictions can matter.
  • Leave time to explore the towns. Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island, Ocean View, Rehoboth Beach and Lewes each offer a different experience.
  • Schedule time for second showings. A favorite property may deserve another look before you fly home.

Private Aviation and Luxury Delaware Real Estate

There's another reason I like this topic for Bright Stellar Beaches.

GED is a natural fit for luxury real estate content.

A buyer considering a multimillion-dollar waterfront or oceanfront property may already use private or corporate aviation. For that buyer, proximity to an airport capable of handling larger business aircraft isn't trivia—it can be part of the property's accessibility.

Bright Stellar Beaches currently features luxury coastal properties throughout Delaware, including multimillion-dollar homes in Fenwick Island and Rehoboth Beach. Bob McCranie - HomeSmart Delaware

That gives us an opportunity to discuss a factor that many generic real estate websites overlook:
